CARD GAME DICTIONARY
I
IN HAND. In Skat, a contract in which the declarer does not look at the skat.
INTRIGUE. In Pope Joan, the Queen and Jack of the trump suit played by the same player.
J
JACK. In games of the All Fours family, the score for winning the Jack of the trump suit.
JACKPOT. In Poker, deal in which a player must hold at least a pair of Jacks to open.
JASZ. In Klaberjass, the Jack of the trump suit.
JINX. In Spoil Five, an undertaking, by the player who has won three tricks, to win the remaining two.
JOKER. An extra card supplied with the standard 52-card pack used in some games as a wild card.
K
KITTY. (1) In games of the Rummy family, signification by a player that all his cards are melded. (2) In Poker, signification by a player that no further bet will be made by him.
L
LAYING OFF. (1) In gin Rummy, the playing of cards to opponent’s melds. (2) In Panguingue the playing of cars to one’s own melds.
LAYOUT. Cards laid out on the table in a prescribed pattern either for the purpose of placing bets or to be moved in accordance with the rules of the game.
LEAST. In Schafkopf, the hand played when no player has offered to be player, so each plays for himself.
LEFT BOWER. In Euchre, the Jack of the same colour as the Jack of the trump suit. cf RIGHT BOWER.
LEFT PEDRO. In Cinch, the 5 of the same colour as the 5 of the trump suit. cf RIGHT PEDRO.
LITTLE CASINO. In Casino, the ♠ 2. cf GREAT CASINO.
LOO. In Loo, failure to win a trick.
LOW. In games of the All Fours family, the score made by the player who is dealt the lowest trump in play. cf HIGH.
LURCH. In Cribbage, winning a game before the opponent has gone half-way round the scoring board.
M
MAKER. The player who names the trump suit.
MANILLE. In Ombre, the ♥ 7 or ♦ 7 if either suit is trumps, the ♠ 2 or ♣ 2 if either suit is trumps.
MARCH. In Euchre, winning all five tricks by one side or one player.
MARRIAGE cf COMMON MARRIAGE and ROYAL MARRIAGE.
MATADORES. In ombre, the collective name for the three top trumps - SPADILLE, MANILLE and BASTO.
MATRIMONY. In Pope Joan, the King and Queen of the trump suit played by the same player.
MELD. A matched set of three or more of a kind or a sequence of three or more of the same suit in consecutive order of rank.
MENEL. In Klabergass, the 9 of trumps.
MIDDLEHAND. In Skat and Schafkopf, the player to Dealer’s right i.e. the player between FOREHAND q.v. and dealer.
MISERE. In Solo Whist, a contract not to win a trick.
MISERY. Same as MISERY q.v.
MISS. In Loo, the widow-hand.
MIXED CANASTA. In Canasta, a meld of seven or more cards of which one, two or three cards are wild. cf NATURAL CANASTA.
MUGGINS. In Cribbage, an announcement that enables a player to take points that his opponent has overlooked.
